The back covers of the Canon A-1, AE-1 and AT-1 cameras are completely removable and readily interchangeable with the Data Back A, an accessory that can be used to record the date or user-designated codes directly onto the film.

Data may be imprinted as the user shoots, afterwards or the unit may be switched off entirely. Three diffferant LED film-exposure settings are provided: B&W, Color 1 (ASA 64-160 color films) and Color 2 (ASA 25-50 color films). Thanks to the extremely low power drain with this unit, more than 8,000 exposures are possible from one battery.

Connection to the camera is made via a cord attaching to the cameras' PC sockets.
