Congratulations to our Top Pic of the Week, Paul Lucas! Paul specializes in portraits, bridal, fashion, and other areas of photography. Using his nifty Nikon gear , he captured these images highlighting many of his genres.

I began taking photos with a Nikon N65 that I purchased secondhand back in 2011. I was actually a musician and had just lost my day job. My girlfriend at the time suggested I pick up a new skill/hobby.

Style and voice are things I still struggle with. I know what is NOT my style: hipster, trendy, etc. I love angles, lines, color, and tones.

I own a Nikon D200 and a Nikon N65, though the D200 was the main workhorse for these shots. My nifty-fifty (Nikkor 50mm 1.8) is the workhorse of my workhorse. For extra reach I use a Nikkor 70-300mm 4-5.6. All purchased from KEH

The head shot was taken in my apartment with one beauty dish as the key light and a bed sheet as the backdrop.

For the image of the three models, we shot in an alcove at the back of a local beach house; all natural light.

The fashion shot was done for an editorial. I used bulletin board paper as the backdrop, one speed-lite, and a great styling team

With the shot of the mother and daughter, I wanted to evoke a portrait from the past without being heavy-handed. I styled the session with a retro-latin feel. Still one of my favorite maternity sessions.

Never be afraid of temporary failure. Try and try again. Don't over think things. My biggest mistakes are when I get too bogged down with the how that I lose sight of both what and why.

As for post processing, I try to keep it simple. Black and white images are roughly 90% done in camera. Color shots get a mild bump in exposure (I always shoot underexposed), I clean up minor blemishes, dodge and burn, then add a few actions and presets of my own design.

My inspiration is everywhere! Old movies, ancient cultures, and MUSIC! Songs play and I visualize a brief clip. Then, I approach each session as though I am capturing stills from that clip.

Thank you, Paul, for allowing us to share these photos! Check out more of his photography on his website and on Instagram  at @lvcasphoto.
