For those who may be discovering your work for the first time, can you introduce yourself and share a little about your journey as a photographer?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m Marcus Lloyd, a lifestyle and travel photographer based in Brooklyn, New York. The<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> journey has been a fascinating one, mostly because it started so much later than most\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m entirely self-taught, and if you knew me in my earlier years, you never would have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guessed I\u2019d become a photographer. It wasn\u2019t something I talked about or even thought <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about. Growing up in Dallas, Texas, I don\u2019t think I even knew photography was a career path. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I moved to New York in 2007 and spent over a decade as a male model, which gave me a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">real familiarity with the camera, even if I was always on the other side of it. But what actually <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">launched my photography career was a meeting that came through a friend. I was running <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social media for brands in the early days of Instagram, and I sat down with a menswear <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">company. At the end of the meeting, they asked if I could also create content. I said yes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">without hesitation, went home, hopped on Craigslist, took the A train to the last stop, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bought a Canon T3i with a kit lens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I brought it back to my apartment in Harlem, and my now wife looked at me and said, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019re going to become a photographer one day.\u201d I laughed it off completely. What first drew you to photographing the world, and how has your relationship with travel and photography evolved over time?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honestly, what drew me to travel photography wasn\u2019t wanderlust in the traditional sense. It <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was more deliberate than that. I saw the camera as a way to enter worlds I was genuinely <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interested in, whether that was hospitality, interiors, food, or hotel work. These were the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spaces I wanted to be a part of, and photography gave me a reason to be in them. Travel <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">became the natural extension of that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the beginning, like a lot of photographers, I was chasing postcard moments. The hot spots, the trending locations, whatever people were posting on Instagram. I wanted to show <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that I had been somewhere, and I was using those familiar images as my proof of presence. I <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">look back on that phase with a lot of affection now, but it was very much about mimicking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what already existed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over time, my own interests started to take over. I\u2019d find myself in Mexico City thinking, I\u2019m <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really into architecture, what if we go to Luis Barrag\u00e1n\u2019s house? Or I\u2019d want to follow a chef <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to the market for the day and photograph the process. My own curiosity started steering <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">things, and that shift changed everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now I\u2019m far more drawn to the things that make a place feel like itself. The mundane <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moments. The produce at a market stall. A couple running a small caf\u00e9. The staff at a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">restaurant. These quieter scenes have so much more pull for me now than any landmark <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ever did. And honestly, once you\u2019ve developed a strong enough eye, getting the postcard <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shot becomes almost automatic. What is it about film photography that continues to resonate with you, and how has embracing its slower pace and limitations shaped the way you approach making images?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every single element of the film process resonates with me, and I mean that genuinely. It <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">starts with the materials themselves. The rolls, the packaging, gathering what you need <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before a trip, thinking about how you\u2019re going to transport it, remembering to ask for hand <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scans at the lab. There\u2019s this whole ecosystem of care and intentionality that surrounds film <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before you even press the shutter, and I find that deeply satisfying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think that care seeps into the work itself. When something costs you something, whether <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that\u2019s money, time, or attention, you approach it differently. You\u2019re more present. You\u2019re <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more deliberate. And that shows up in the images in ways that are hard to fully articulate but <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">easy to feel when you look at the final results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then there\u2019s the actual look of a film photograph. The way highlights retain and roll off <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rather than clip. The depth and texture that comes from grain. The sense that an image <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could have been made anytime, anywhere, that you can\u2019t quite place it in a decade. That <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">timelessness is something I\u2019m genuinely chasing in my work. I want to create images that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feel classic and lasting, and film is the most direct path to that for me. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I do shoot digital, and I enjoy it. But every opportunity I get to push film, even on client work, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I take it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Are there certain moments, places, or experiences where you feel film helps you connect more deeply with your surroundings or tell a more authentic story?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shooting film keeps you completely in the moment, and that\u2019s one of my favorite things <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about it. There\u2019s something almost meditative about pressing the shutter, advancing the roll, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and knowing that moment has been sealed. You can\u2019t go back and review it. You can\u2019t <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">second-guess it. It\u2019s done, and now you move forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m also not a photographer who shoots a scene extensively. I might take one frame of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">something. So that discipline of being present and committing to what you see feels very <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">natural to me with film. There\u2019s no temptation to bury your face in a screen and scroll back <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">through what you just made. You see it, you feel it, you capture it, and you\u2019re still right there <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the experience.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That uninterrupted presence is one of the most valuable things film gives me, especially <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while traveling. You have no choice but to let go and be free in that moment. In the beginning, I was genuinely reluctant to even call myself a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">photographer. The title felt so weighty and respected that I wasn\u2019t sure I had any right to it, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">let alone the title of artist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when I look back now, I see a lot of consistency in how I\u2019ve approached things. A kind of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stubbornness, really. I\u2019ve always been deliberate about not chasing trends, about sticking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with what I believe in even when it isn\u2019t fashionable. That\u2019s been true with gear, with film, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the kind of work I pursue. I find something I love, and I commit to it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What has genuinely shifted my perspective is seeing which images resonate with collectors <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and print buyers. A lot of them were made on quiet mornings when I just wanted to walk <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">around and see what I found. A photo from the Upper East Side was taken on a spontaneous <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">walk. A moment with cherry blossoms because I wanted to get outside early. There\u2019s a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">humility to those images, and seeing that they\u2019re the ones that connect most deeply with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people has been freeing in a way that\u2019s hard to fully describe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s taught me to trust the process even when I don\u2019t know the outcome. You don\u2019t always <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">know which image will be the one someone needs on their wall. But you do know that when <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you go out and trust what you see and press the shutter when something moves you, things <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tend to work out.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>You&#8217;ve talked about shifting from creating content to creating lasting work. What does that distinction mean to you, and how has it influenced the way you approach photography today?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being a photographer who came up through the Instagram era puts you in this interesting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hybrid position. And I think for a long time, everything I did was filtered through the lens of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">content creation. There\u2019s nothing wrong with that. It\u2019s actually remarkable that I was able to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">build a career through that platform. But over time, I started to see where it was pulling me <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in directions that didn\u2019t feel right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chasing the algorithm starts to feel like a fool\u2019s errand at some point. You find yourself <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">subtly bending your work toward what performs, even if you\u2019re not directly copying anyone. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know which photos will do well, and the temptation is to lean into those and move away <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the things that feel truer but quieter. That\u2019s where I think the danger lies for a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">photographer who wants to develop as an artist. When you start making work to fit in, you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">start losing the thread of what makes your work yours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What helped shift my perspective was realizing that there are incredibly accomplished <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">photographers out there who barely have an Instagram presence. That opened something <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">up for me. It confirmed that the work itself is the thing, not the platform. And I\u2019ve tried to let <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that guide me more and more. Creating for feeling rather than for engagement. What inspired you to create the first event, and what has surprised you most about seeing photography become a means of bringing people together?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It started in the most organic way possible. My co-founder Mark and I were already doing this <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naturally. We\u2019d meet up, walk around with our cameras, stop somewhere for a Negroni, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just talk. About our work, our careers, creativity, the industry, all of it. Those conversations <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">always left me feeling genuinely energized and creatively full in a way that\u2019s hard to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manufacture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over time, other people would join us, and everyone kept walking away with the same <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feeling. People would say, when are we doing that again? And that\u2019s when we knew there <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was something real there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What I want people to understand is that the photo walk concept isn\u2019t new. It\u2019s been around <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forever. But when you put yourself honestly into something, it comes out differently. I <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">genuinely love Negronis. That\u2019s where the name came from. And when you lead with something that\u2019s actually true to who you are, people feel that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The thing that surprised me most is how much the conversation leads the day. Yes, we\u2019re <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">photographers, and we have our cameras out. But the real value is in what gets said between <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">frames. The connections that happen when creative people are out moving together in a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">city with no agenda other than to see what\u2019s there.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Why do you think in-person creative communities are so important, especially in a time when so much photography is experienced and shared digitally? What do you hope people take away from a Negroni Photo Walk beyond the photographs they make?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photography is a surprisingly gatekept industry. A lot of the real information, how people get <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clients, how they build sustainable careers, how they navigate the business side of things, is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rarely shared openly. You often have to figure it out the hard way, through your own <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mistakes and your own trial and error.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What an in-person community can do is short-circuit some of that friction. When you\u2019re <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">standing next to someone, watching how they work, having a real conversation with them, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you can access things that would never make it into a caption or a tutorial. The nuances. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The honest parts. The things people don\u2019t post about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond that, there\u2019s something irreplaceable about seeing how another photographer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actually sees. The way they move through a space, what draws their eye, when they choose <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to raise the camera, and when they don\u2019t. That\u2019s where so much of the learning lives, and it <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only happens in person. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I hope people leave feeling energized and creatively refueled. What have you learned about balancing collaboration while maintaining your individual creative voices, and how do you inspire each other throughout that process?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working together has taught me as much about life as it has about photography. Maybe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most important thing I\u2019ve learned is that your ego has to be checked at the door <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constantly. When you work with your partner, there is no clean separation between work and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">home. If you\u2019re dismissive or closed off during a creative conversation, that energy doesn\u2019t <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disappear when you close the laptop. It follows you into dinner, into the evening, into the relationship. So you have to be much more conscious of how you show up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other thing it\u2019s taught me is to trust your collaborator even when you can\u2019t see it yet. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have been plenty of times where R\u2019el was excited about an idea I wasn\u2019t fully feeling. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019d go along with it out of trust, and it would turn out to be exactly right. Those moments are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">humbling in the best way. They remind you that you don\u2019t have the whole picture, and that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the reason you\u2019re collaborating with someone is that you already believe in them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also made me a better collaborator across the board. How do you balance documenting a place with simply being present and experiencing it?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Film solved this problem for me almost completely, even though that wasn\u2019t the reason I <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">picked it up. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early on, especially when traveling for work, I\u2019d find myself back at the hotel at the end of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the day uploading SD cards, editing in Lightroom, trying to post something to stories, going <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">through video. And I\u2019d realize that a big part of being somewhere had slipped away in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">process of documenting it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With film, that entire digital workflow disappears. There\u2019s nothing to upload at the end of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">night. Nothing to scroll through, edit, or share. The images are out there somewhere on a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">roll, and you won\u2019t see them for days. And rather than feeling like a loss, it\u2019s become one of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the most freeing parts of the process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might never come back to a place. That\u2019s something I try to hold onto when I travel. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">presence you have right now, in this city, on this street, at this dinner, is the most valuable <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asset you have. Posting can wait. Sharing can wait. Engaging can wait. It\u2019s the camera that has played the most significant role in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my work up to this point. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But getting there was a journey in itself. An earlier milestone was the Konica Hexar AF, which <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was the first film camera I took on a trip where I shot film exclusively. That was Cuba, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">around 2014. It was a bit of a leap of faith at the time, leaning entirely on film somewhere, that far from home with no digital backup. But you figure it out, and that experience built a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kind of confidence in the process that I\u2019ve carried ever since.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What I love about the M6 specifically is the form factor. It\u2019s small enough that you always <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">want it with you, which means it\u2019s always with you. And there\u2019s a lot of truth to the idea that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the best camera is the one you actually have on you. The M6 earns that title every time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>For photographers interested in exploring film, what advice would you give them to embrace the slower process and find their own perspective?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trust your gut more than you trust the algorithm. That\u2019s the foundation of everything. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you find yourself making images because you think they\u2019ll perform well rather than <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because they genuinely interest you, that\u2019s a signal worth paying attention to. The work that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lasts, the work that actually defines you, comes from following your own curiosity, not from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reverse-engineering what\u2019s popular.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the technical side, the most important thing you can do when you\u2019re starting with film is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to eliminate the variables that lead to disappointment. Expose for the shadows. Rate your film <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at half box speed. If your camera doesn\u2019t have a built-in light meter, invest in one or use an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">app on your phone. These aren\u2019t complicated adjustments, but they make an enormous <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">difference in what you get back from the lab.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s nothing more discouraging than waiting a week for your film to come back and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opening a set of muddy, underexposed images. So strip away those early mistakes, build the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">habit of exposing correctly, and then you can press the shutter with real confidence. From <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there, the surprises become pleasant ones. Doors open that you couldn\u2019t have predicted six <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">months ago. Clients reach out from directions you never anticipated. That\u2019s one of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">things I love most about it, and also one of the things that requires the most trust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What I can tell you is what I\u2019m working toward. Every morning, I sit down with my coffee and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do my morning pages, and one of the things I write is: I am a legendary, prolific <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">photographer. I write that because I genuinely believe that\u2019s the standard I\u2019m building <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toward. Not fame for its own sake, but a body of work and a creative legacy that means <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">something. Consistency, longevity, depth. That\u2019s what legendary means to me. Right now, I\u2019m living in a really interesting space where fine art and commercial work are informing each other. I might shoot a campaign for a client one day and then go out the next morning with the same camera to explore the city on my own terms. The fact that clients are increasingly trusting my vision and my approach rather than asking me to conform to something else has been one of the most meaningful developments in my career. It took time to get there, but the reward is real.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the horizon: more Negroni Photo Walks, and Mark and I are exploring the possibility of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taking those into workshop territory. The print side of my work is expanding in ways I\u2019m <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really excited about, including some things I can\u2019t talk about yet but that feel significant. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Books are on my mind. Editorial work continues to be something I love. And through it all, I <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">want to stay present in every lane, whether I\u2019m shooting for a major brand or making a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YouTube episode or walking around a neighborhood with no agenda. I never want to feel too <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">important for any of it.
