Nikon states the 'F' in 'DF' stands for 'fusion'. The Nikon DF DSLR combines the classic 35mm film SLR style with the DSLR capabilities and traditional controls. The DF was structured around the 16 MP full frame sensor from the flagship D4 (with processor) and the D610 AF system. More conveniently, the DF includes a retractable meter coupling tab allowing mounting of pre-1977 non-AI lenses.

The DF features Nikon AF-S Nikkor Special Edition 50mm f/1.8G lens. It is designed for Nikon FX and DX DSLRs. This lightweight at 6.70oz and stylish design combines improved knurling on the focus ring to add a practical and artistic element to complement the refined manual focusing control. The Nikkor 50mm Special Edition has a f/1.8 maximum aperture and f/16 minimum, 1.48' minimum focusing distance, 7 elements in 6 groups with one aspherical element, and seven diaphragm blades.
