The Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM is a fast versatile wide angle lens prime lens for Canon Full Frame 35mm format EOS SLR Cameras.  The ultra bright f/1.8 maximum aperture lets in more than twice as much light as more common f/2.8 lens options; in addition to making available light viewing easier and enabling faster shutter speeds, the large aperture design allows a bit more background blur.  The lens produces a fairly wide 75° angle of view practical for a broad range of applications.  The EF 28mm f/1.8 uses a high quality optical design of 10 SSC (Super Spectra Coating) multi-coated elements in 9 groups including one aspherical aspherical element that makes superb images possible.  Focusing performance is also most excellent.  The lens uses an efficient rear focusing arrangent that requires the movement of less mass than conventional designs.  A fast responsive USM (UltraSonic Motor) delivers autofocus power swiftly and silently.  The focusing mechanicals are also designed to allow full time manual focus override instantly.

The 28mm f/1.8 is positioned in Canon's middle tier of lenses, it's a step up from entry level lenses over which it offers additional versatility and performance.  While well constructed higher end L-Series typically feature more heavy duty construction.  Though not quite as wide, the EF 28mm f/1.8 USM is a more affordable and lighter alternative to L-Series 24mm f/1.4 options.  With it's wide bright big coverage and speed the affordable EF 28mm f/1.8 USM opens up a world of photographic possibilities; it's a very good value, a real bargain.
