Description

Designed for the Leica R System, the Leica 70-180mm f/2.8 Vario-APO-Elmarit-R ROM (introduced in 1995) is a medium telephoto zoom lens with outstanding build and image quality; matching and surpassing that of fixed focal length lenses. This fast high performance lens is relatively compact, easy to use, and has solid metal construction.

The Leica 70-180mm f/2.8 Vario-APO-Elmarit-R ROM is designed with 12 different types of glass, five of which consist of special anomalous partial dispersion glass to correct for apochromatic residual errors. It is distinguished by the virtual absence of coma, astigmatism and field curvature. The lens comes equipped with a built-in telescopic and rubber armored lenshood for added protection.

The lens is extremely sharp throughout the entire focal range of 70 to 180mm, even wide open. With virtually insignificant vignetting at full aperture, the Leica 70-180mm f/2.8 Vario-APO-Elmarit-R ROM gets tack sharp at f/5.6 and is entirely free of artificial vignetting.

The 70-180mm f/2.8 Vario-APO-Elmarit-R can also be used to good effect with Leica APO tele-extenders when needed. Leica M users can enjoy this premium optic with the addition of the Leica R-Adapter M (an Electronic Visoflex viewfinder is also useful).

The Leica 70-180mm f/2.8 Vario-APO-Elmarit-R ROM is a bit of rarity, unfortunately only a few thousand were produced before Leica discontinued the R System 2009. The few collectors and shooters able to experience this lens will appreciate it's craftsmanship, quality, and multi-use versatility.
