Sony A-mount kit zoom covering 18-55mm at f/3.5-5.6.
The Sony DT 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 SAM covers the focal range that most shooters reach for first: wide enough at 18mm for interiors, group shots, and environmental portraits, and reaching 55mm for tighter framing without changing glass. The variable maximum aperture of f/3.5 at 18mm and f/5.6 at 55mm is standard for this class of zoom, and it keeps the lens paired well with the APS-C Sony Alpha DSLR and SLT bodies it was designed for.
For photographers building out a Sony A-mount system, this lens slots in as a natural starting point. It covers the workhorse range without requiring a second lens for general-purpose shooting. Street photographers walking a city block, travelers who want one lens on the camera all day, and new Alpha shooters learning exposure fundamentals will all find the 18-55mm range practical and forgiving.
Who It's For
Photographers shooting on Sony Alpha DSLR or SLT bodies who need a general-purpose zoom will find the 18-55mm range covers the bulk of everyday shooting without carrying multiple lenses. Travel photographers benefit from the wide-to-short-tele span in a single mount. Students and newer shooters learning on an A-mount system get a focal range suited to portraits at 55mm and wider environmental work at 18mm. Street photographers who prefer a single-lens setup for a day out have enough reach on either end to work fluidly across scenes.
