It's a professional grade fast constant aperture telephoto zoom lens with autofocus capability. No effort was spared on the optics, 16 elements in 11 groups with full multicoating including 3 ED (Extra Low Dispersion) glass elements were designed and assembled with Nikon's expert craftsmanship. This lens was an instant hit with photojournalists and anyone else wanting maximum versatility and image quality. The f/2.8 maximum aperture produces a bright viewfinder image and makes use of faster shutter speeds easier, indispensable features when needing to shoot in dim available lighting conditions. The 80-200mm f2.8 Macro ED offers significant utility as a portrait lens with it's ability to produce substantial background blur and zoom quickly to change framing.

The push pull design is most popular with photographers comfortable hand holding. While autofocus capable (on Nikon bodies with built-in focus motor) , it's single ring push pull zoom and focus design makes it one of the best zoom options available for a high quality lens for manual focus Nikon 35mm film cameras.

In 1992 Nikon released an updated model (Nikon USA model 1985) with very similar optics and the ability to transmit D type distance information to compatible cameras (Nikon N90 and later bodies).
