The Nikon Nikkor 70-200mm f/4 G ED VR AF-S is a very high quality yet easy handling telephoto zoom lens well suited for professional or enthusiast use. The lens features a very strong optical design formulated into 20 elements in 14 groups including 3 ED (Extra Low Dispersion) glass elemenets and one HRI (High Refractive Index) element. A combination of Nano Crystal Coating and Super Integrated Coatings minimize internal reflections and maximize contrast. Optical performance is on par with other pro level telephoto zooms.

The maximum aperture of f/4 stays constant through the entire zoom range and allows for a good amount of background blur and seperation. The f/4 maximum aperture makes a more compact and lighter weight lens design possible. Compared to the average f/2.8 telephoto zoom a weight savings of almost a pound and a half is realized. Less weight makes the lens easier to carry and hand hold steady while shooting. Nikon's VR Vibration Reduction technology helps reduce handheld shake and preserve sharpness. Effective use of slower shutter speeds (up to 4 stops slower) than otherwise practical makes challenging lighting less of a challenge. A dedicated rotating tripod collar (model RT-1) is available as a separate accessory and makes vertical framing on tripods or monopods easy.

Focus is quick and quiet thanks to a AF-S SWM Silent Wave Motor. Full time manual focus override allows for focus adjustments on the fly without needing to change a setting. The IF internal focus design makes using a polarizer easy since filters will not rotate when focusing. A focus distance limit switch is provides two focus ranges infinity to 3m, or the Full (infinity to 1 meter close focus). Autofocus is possible even with 2x teleconverters when attached to f/8-compatible body.
