Panasonic Lumix S9: full-frame hybrid in a rangefinder-sized body
The S9 puts a 24.2MP full-frame BSI-CMOS sensor into a body measuring 126 x 74 x 47mm and weighing 486g. That's the same core sensor as the S5 II, including 6K Open Gate video recording, phase-detect autofocus, and up to 30 fps continuous shooting, all packaged without a viewfinder hump or a mechanical shutter. The electronic-only shutter is silent and vibration-free, which matters in courtrooms, ceremonies, and quiet galleries where a clicking mirror would draw attention.
Stabilization is one of this camera's clearest strengths. The 5-stop IBIS rating climbs to 6.5 stops with Dual IS 2 when paired with a compatible L-Mount lens, and the results in handheld video are immediately apparent. The fully articulated 3-inch touchscreen with 1,840,000 dots flips forward for self-facing work and tilts for low or overhead angles. A dedicated LUT button on the rear gives direct access to Panasonic's Real-time LUT system, letting you bake in color grades at capture than in post. The ISO range runs from 100 to 51200 natively, with extended settings down to 50 and up to 204800.
The L-Mount system gives you access to native glass from Panasonic, Sigma, and Leica, plus a wide adapter ecosystem for vintage lenses. USB 3.2 Gen 2 handles charging and fast data transfer. At 470 shots per charge under CIPA conditions, the battery holds up through a serious day of shooting.
Who It's For
Travel photographers who refuse to check a bag will appreciate the full-frame image quality packed into a body that slips into a jacket pocket alongside a Sigma I-series prime. Vloggers and solo video creators benefit from the 6K Open Gate capture, effective IBIS, and a forward-facing articulated screen that makes single-operator work practical. Street photographers working in sensitive environments gain from the completely silent electronic shutter at up to 30 fps. Hybrid shooters who want a single body for stills and social-ready video will find the Real-time LUT system and built-in Wi-Fi cut the time between capture and posting considerably.

FAQ
- Does the S9 have a viewfinder?
- No. The S9 uses only the fully articulated 3-inch touchscreen for composition and playback, with no optical or electronic viewfinder option.
- How does the IBIS compare to other full-frame cameras?
- The 5-stop IBIS rating climbs to 6.5 stops with Dual IS 2 when paired with compatible L-Mount lenses. In handheld video, the stabilization is immediately apparent and ranks among the most effective available.
- Can I use flash with the S9?
- No. The S9 has no built-in flash and no external flash support, as it uses an electronic shutter only which does not sync with flash.
- What video formats and resolutions does it shoot?
- The S9 records 1080p up to 120fps, 4K up to 60fps (APS-C crop at 50-60p), and 6K in Open Gate format up to 30fps. It supports H.264, H.265, and MPEG-4 with a new MP4 Lite mode for quick mobile transfer.
- How many shots can I get per charge?
- The S9 delivers 470 shots under CIPA conditions on a single BLK22 battery. Recording times are limited to 20 minutes for 1080, 15 minutes for 4K, and 10 minutes for 6K before the camera requires cooling.
- What is the Real-time LUT system?
- The dedicated LUT button gives direct access to Panasonic's Look Up Table filters, allowing you to apply color grades at capture in photos or video rather than post-processing. You can download free LUTs from creators via the Lumix Lab app or create custom presets.
- Why would I choose the S9 over the S5 II?
- The S9 is 126 x 74 x 47mm and weighs 486g versus the S5 II's larger body with viewfinder. Both share the same 24.2MP sensor and video capabilities, but the S9 trades the EVF for a rangefinder-style form factor and lower cost.
