Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM: the kit lens that earns its place.
Built for EOS M-series mirrorless cameras, this 15-45mm covers a 24-72mm equivalent range, wide enough for architecture and interiors, long enough for portraits and street work. Three aspherical elements, including one glass-molded and two precision-molded, keep distortion and chromatic aberration in check across the full zoom range. The optical design is doing real work here, not just filling a spec sheet.
The STM autofocus motor is tuned for quiet, smooth operation, which matters the moment you switch to video or shoot somewhere that demands discretion. Built-in Image Stabilization gives handheld shooting a meaningful safety net in lower light. The 49mm filter thread keeps accessory costs down, and the silver finish pairs cleanly with silver EOS M bodies.
For a lens this compact covering this range, the optical engineering investment is genuine. It's a proven travel focal length in a package small enough that you'll actually bring it.
Who It's For
Travel photographers get the 24-72mm equivalent range needed to move from landscape establishing shots to compressed street portraits without swapping glass. Everyday shooters building their first mirrorless kit benefit from IS STM autofocus that make handheld and video work more forgiving. Content creators shooting in quiet environments will find the STM motor stays out of the audio. Those who shoot in mixed indoor and outdoor situations get a single lens that can handle both without compromise, in a form factor that doesn't add bulk to a small EOS M body.

FAQ
- What's the actual focal length range when mounted on an EOS M body?
- 15-45mm native, which translates to a 24-72mm equivalent range on APS-C. That's wide enough for architecture and interiors at 24mm equivalent, long enough for portraits at 72mm equivalent.
- Does the STM motor work well for video?
- Yes. STM is specifically tuned for quiet, smooth autofocus operation during video recording and in situations where silent focus matters.
- How much does Image Stabilization help in low light?
- IS gives handheld shooting a meaningful safety net in lower light, extending your handholdable shutter speeds - though exact stops of correction aren't specified in the official specs.
- What's the maximum aperture?
- f/3.5 at 15mm, widening to f/6.3 at 45mm. The aperture narrows as you zoom, which is typical for this class of lens.
- Will my existing Canon EF lenses work on an EOS M body with this lens?
- No. This is an EF-M mount lens for EOS M-series cameras. EF lenses require an adapter to work on EOS M bodies.
- What size filters does this lens accept?
- 49mm. That's a common filter size, keeping accessory costs down.
- How is distortion and color fringing controlled?
- Three aspherical elements - one glass-molded and two precision-molded - are engineered to control distortion and chromatic aberration across the zoom range.
