Canon 18-135mm EF-S zoom with Nano USM AF for stills and video
The 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Nano USM covers a 28.8-216mm equivalent range on APS-C bodies, making it one of the few single-lens solutions that gets you from environmental wide-angle to genuine telephoto reach without a bag change. The Nano USM motor is the real story here: it combines a ring-type ultrasonic motor for fast, decisive stills acquisition with a stepping motor that runs quietly and smoothly during video recording. Those aren't just two separate modes bolted together, the system transitions between them based on what you're doing, which matters on a hybrid shoot.
Image Stabilization adds handheld confidence across the zoom range, and the 67mm filter thread is a standard size that won't require a dedicated filter kit. Compatibility with Canon's optional PZ-E1 Power Zoom Adapter gives video shooters motorized zoom control, a feature that separates this lens from basic kit optics. For Canon APS-C DSLR owners who want one lens that works equally well for a weekend travel shoot and a short documentary, the 18-135mm Nano USM has the AF architecture and range to back that up.
Who It's For
Travel photographers carrying a single body will find the 18-135mm range covers most situations without a second lens. Documentary and run-and-gun video shooters benefit directly from the stepping motor's silent AF operation, since the ring-type USM alone would introduce focus noise into a recording. Event photographers working EF-S bodies like the 90D get quick subject acquisition from wide to telephoto during unpredictable moments. Content creators who alternate between stills and video within the same session get a motor system built specifically for that workflow.

FAQ
- Does the Nano USM motor really handle both stills and video AF differently?
- Yes. The ring-type ultrasonic motor prioritizes speed and precision for stills autofocus, while the stepping motor kicks in during video recording to eliminate focus breathing and motor noise. The lens switches between them automatically based on what you're shooting.
- What's the equivalent focal length on an APS-C body?
- 28.8-216mm. That's wide enough for landscapes and tight enough for portraits and wildlife without swapping lenses.
- Can I use a motorized zoom adapter with this lens?
- Yes, it's compatible with Canon's optional PZ-E1 Power Zoom Adapter for motorized zoom control during video work.
- How much image stabilization does the IS system provide?
- Four stops of compensation for handheld shooting at any focal length across the zoom range.
- What filter size does this lens use?
- 67mm, a standard thread that works with most affordable filter sets without needing adapter rings.
- Is this lens good for video as well as stills?
- It's built for both. The Nano USM motor and stepping mechanism prioritize smooth, silent focus acquisition during video, while still delivering quick AF for stills work.
