The Canon EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM is a telephoto zoom for Canon EOS SLR cameras. The 100-300mm is a high quality middle tier lens designed as a faster focusing step up from basic entry level 75-300mm options. The 100-300mm features a respectable 10 element in 13 group optical formulation that is fully multi-coated and covers full frame sensors. The lens uses an internal rear focusing group coupled with a USM (UltraSonic Motor); this efficient arrangement uses less mass and a more powerful motor to deliver noticeably more responsive autofocus performance. The USM is also extremely quiet and allows full time manual focus override.
The 100-300mm's telephoto focal lengths offers a useful amount magnification without requiring the major step up in extra weight and expense required in quality 400mm optics. The lens embraces it's high magnification mission and eschews sub-100mm focal lengths for more important priorities; sure other telephoto zooms may zoom out a bit wider but most users already have a lens in around the 80mm focal length anyway. As a practical portable & well made full frame telephoto with good performance the 100-300mm has always been popular; as it's become more inexpensive with the arrival of newer flashier models, the 100-300 has become even more of an incredible value.
