The Canon EF 35mm f/2 (Canon part# 2507A002) is a moderately wide angle lens for Full Frame 35mm format Canon EOS SLR cameras.  The EF 35mm f/2 has been a popular staple in the EOS system since it's inception.  The lens offers a wide angle field of view without objectionable distortion or major loss of magnification.  The EF 35mm produces excellent images with great sharpness, and contrast with rich color.  The bright f/2 maximum aperture produces a bright viewfinder image and makes shooting in dim available lighting easier (especially compared to most zooms).

The EF 35mm f/2's slightly wide field of view fits noticeably more in the image than a standard 50mm lens yet doens't distort perspective; many photographers choose this sort of lens over a 50mm as a walk-around lens sometimes reasoning that they can always crop the image later if needed.  The lens is also very compact at just 43mm in length and light in weight at 7.4 ounces, ideal for travel while not taking up much space in your bag.  With it's wide yet natural perspective the EF 35mm f/2 is especially well suited for landscapes, architecture, or group pictures; other applications are only limited by your creativity.

In 2012 Canon introduced a long awaited upgrade the Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM (Canon part# 5178B002) which offers faster focusing and new optical design incorporating an Image Stabilizer.  Because the newer version carries a higher price the old reliable original remains a popular choice especially among tripod shooters.  Similar looking cheaper copies also exist but the quality of the authentic genuine Canon product has earned a great deal of trust from a great many photographers and that's reflected in the value it retains.
