Nikon's simple 14MP point-and-shoot with AA-battery convenience
The Coolpix L24 strips photography down to the basics: point, shoot, done. Its 1/2.3" CCD sensor delivers 14MP stills through a 37-134mm equivalent zoom lens (3.6x optical), with a maximum aperture of f/3.1 at the wide end. There's no manual exposure control here, no aperture or shutter priority, just Nikon's scene modes handling the decisions while you frame the shot on the fixed 3" TFT LCD.
What makes the L24 practical for everyday carry is its power source: 2 x AA batteries instead of a proprietary lithium pack. Run it dead on a hike or a weekend trip and any corner store solves the problem. CIPA rates battery life at 220 shots per set, enough for a day of casual shooting. The 9-point autofocus system handles general framing tasks, and macro focusing down to 5cm lets you get close on small subjects like flowers or tabletop objects.
Video tops out at 640x480 (30fps) in Motion JPEG, a reminder this is a stills-first snapshot camera built for prints and screen sharing than serious movie work. At 182g and just 28mm thick, it slides into a pocket without complaint. This is a camera built for people who want images without menus getting in the way.
Who It's For
Casual shooters who want a grab-and-go camera without learning exposure triangles will appreciate the scene-mode-driven interface and fixed 3" LCD for quick framing. Travelers benefit from the AA battery setup, since replacements are available anywhere, removing the anxiety of a dead proprietary battery far from an outlet. Parents documenting kids and family gatherings get built-in flash with a 7m range and a self-timer for group shots. Anyone shooting close-up subjects, like small collectibles or garden blooms, can lean on the 5cm macro focus range to get detail without extra gear.

FAQ
- What's the actual battery life on the L24 before it dies?
- CIPA rates 220 shots per pair of AA batteries. Real-world mileage varies with LCD use and flash frequency, but two fresh AAs easily get you through a day of casual shooting.
- Can you shoot in aperture or shutter priority mode?
- No. The L24 uses scene modes only - Nikon handles exposure, you frame the shot. There's exposure compensation at ±2 EV in 1/3 stops if you need to adjust, but no manual aperture or shutter control.
- How close can you focus with this camera?
- Macro mode focuses down to 5cm (about 2 inches). Normal focusing starts at 30cm, so macro gives you real flexibility for flowers, small objects, or product shots.
- Does the L24 have image stabilization?
- No optical or electronic stabilization. The fixed-aperture 3.6x zoom and fixed 3" LCD mean you're relying on steady hands at wider focal lengths, though the auto ISO climbing to 6,400 does help in dim light.
- What video quality does it shoot?
- 640x480 at 30fps in Motion JPEG format, which is good enough for web sharing or brief clips but not serious video work. It's a stills camera first.
- Does it have manual focus or a real viewfinder?
- No manual focus, and no optical or electronic viewfinder - you compose entirely on the 3" TFT LCD screen. Framing is fixed to what the live view shows.
- Can you use it with external flash or remote triggers?
- No external flash support and no remote control socket. The built-in flash maxes out at 7 meters, which covers typical indoor and outdoor snapshots but nothing beyond.
