It's the glass! When Leica reformulated the f3.5 Summaron they were able to increase the aperture to f2.8 by using rare Lanthanum glass. This glass which eliminated the need to add to the existing six elements also let the Leica engineers retain the symmetry of the original optical design. Produced between 1958-1974.
