Nikon 135mm f/2.8 NIKKOR-Q: manual telephoto built on the F mount
The NIKKOR-Q Auto 135mm f/2.8 is a manual focus telephoto on the Nikon F mount, carrying the NIKKOR-Q optical designation and a 52mm filter thread. At f/2.8, it offers a fast maximum aperture for a 135mm focal length, giving photographers meaningful control over depth of field at this reach. The Non-AI designation means this lens requires attention to body compatibility before shooting, pair it with a body that suits your workflow.
For photographers drawn to manual glass, the deliberate nature of working with this lens is part of the appeal. There are no autofocus motors or electronic contacts to think about, just a focal length, an aperture ring, and a focus ring. At 135mm and f/2.8, the optical geometry favors subject separation and a compressed perspective, making it an useful tool for controlled, thoughtful shooting. Getting into the NIKKOR-Q 135mm f/2.8 costs a fraction of what modern telephoto glass commands, and that gap in price rarely shows up where it matters most to the photographers who choose lenses like this.
Who It's For
Portrait photographers who prefer manual focus glass will find the 135mm focal length and f/2.8 aperture well suited to head-and-shoulder work at comfortable working distances. Film shooters using older Nikon F-mount bodies that accept Non-AI lenses can run this lens without modification. Collectors focused on the NIKKOR-Q lineage have a direct reason to seek this specific optical formula out. Street and documentary photographers who shoot slowly and deliberately will appreciate the compact manual operation at an useful telephoto reach.

FAQ
- What does Non-AI mean, and does it affect compatibility?
- Non-AI refers to lenses made before Nikon's AI (Aperture Indexing) system. This lens requires a body compatible with Non-AI optics - confirm your camera accepts Non-AI glass before pairing them.
- What's the filter thread size?
- 52mm. Standard size, so filters and accessories are readily available.
- Is this lens autofocus?
- No. The NIKKOR-Q Auto 135mm f/2.8 is fully manual focus. There are no autofocus motors or electronic contacts.
- What focal length and aperture does it offer?
- 135mm focal length at f/2.8 maximum aperture. That f/2.8 aperture gives you control over depth of field at this reach and works well in lower light for a manual telephoto.
- What mount is this lens?
- Nikon F mount, Non-AI specification. Verify your body's Non-AI compatibility before use.
- Why would I shoot a manual focus telephoto like this?
- Manual focus and no electronics mean straightforward, deliberate operation. At 135mm and f/2.8, the optical geometry delivers subject separation and compressed perspective - useful for controlled shooting without the cost of modern autofocus glass.
