The Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 G DX Aspherical ED IF AF-S Autofocus Lens is a pro level wide angle zoom for Nikon digital cameras with DX format sensors. It features three ED (Extra low Dispersion) elements and three aspherical elements to deliver great optical performance. The lens covers a very useful range of focal lengths from wide angle at 17mm (Full Frame equivalent of 26mm ) to the start of the portrait range at 55mm (Full Frame equivalent of 82mm) all with out the need to switch lenses. A constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 allows for a good amout of background blur and maximizes flexibility in challenging lighting . Focusing is quick and quiet thanks to an Internal Focus (IF) design paired with a Nikon AF-S Silent Wave Moto (SWM). Designed for the demands of pros it's a great all around zoom for a variety of situations.

The Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 AF-S is the go to lens for most situations a photographer will find themselves in. I call it a close combat lens.

While not necessarily appealing to a photographer when they need long zoom reach. As a close combat wide to medium zoom lens, it's great for shooting groups and medium range subjects. The constant F2.8 aperture setting will perform well in low light, helping it cover a good percentage of the general photographic situations most people will find themselves in. It being a pro lens there is significant weight to it, so you should know beforehand that it's not a light weight experience. - Michael Reese
