Description

The Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G ED DX AF-S VR is a telephoto zoom lens for DX format Nikon digital SLR cameras. It's a compact lens that's able to magnify distant objects a great deal, enough that the lens can arguably be called a super-telephoto.

The Nikon 55-300mm produces an angle of view starts at 28°50' when set to the 55mm focal length setting and narrows to a much more magnified 5°20' angle of view when zoomed all the way in to the 300mm focal length setting. That's about as much reach as you can get before you move into another tier of lens. Lenses offering magnification beyond the 300mm focal length with good image quality tend towards larger designs and a bit more expense.

The Nikkor 55-300mm VR is engineered to delivers the image quality people expect from a Nikon lens. It's the first Nikon lens to use a special HRI (High Refractive Index) lens element that improves image quality high while helping make the lens slimmer. The optical design also includes two ED (Extra Low Dispersion) glass elements and 14 other high quality lens elements assembled in 11 groups, all covered with Nikon's SIC multicoating to maximize contrast and color reproduction.

When an image is magnified, camera and lens shake is also magnified. Even very small movements can result in significant unwanted blurring of focus. The VR II image stabilization system in the Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G ED DX AF-S VR helps you take sharper images when shooting handheld by detecting the shake and adjusting optics to counteract your movements in real time. VR II image stabilization system allows you to shoot handheld at shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible (up to 4 shutter speeds slower) so you get sharper still images and more stable video capture.

The Nikkor 55-300mm is a perfect companion lens to 18-55mm or similar wide angle lenses. It's great for capturing distant subjects including athletic events, outdoor animals, distant landscapes, and tightly framed or distant portraits that deliver the most flattering perspective with the least amount of background distraction. It's a great practical lens for any Nikon DX user.
