Nikon 35mm f/1.4 NIKKOR AI: a classic fast wide in F mount.
The 35mm focal length sits at a natural middle ground between a true wide angle and a standard view, and f/1.4 gives you real light-gathering capability in low-light situations where slower lenses fall apart. Manual focus puts the photographer in direct control of the focal plane, which matters when you are working close to a subject or shooting wide open where depth of field is razor thin. The AI coupling integrates with metering systems on compatible Nikon F-mount bodies, so you are not completely cut off from the camera's exposure tools.
This is a lens with a proven optical design and a 52mm filter thread, keeping your filter kit compact and affordable. Shooting manually demands discipline, but it also slows you down in an useful way, you think more carefully about focus, about distance, about the moment. For photographers who have moved past the point of needing autofocus to feel confident, this lens rewards that skill directly. The f/1.4 maximum aperture at 35mm is a combination that holds its value across decades of shooting.
Who It's For
Street photographers working in low light will find f/1.4 at 35mm gives them enough field of view to work candidly without stepping too far back. Documentary shooters who want a focal length close to natural human perspective, with the ability to shoot in dim interiors, will get steady use from this lens. Film photographers running Nikon F-mount bodies get full AI coupling integration. Photographers building a manual-focus kit on a budget will find this lens fits a standard 52mm filter system they may already own.

FAQ
- What's the filter size for this 35mm?
- 52mm. That's small enough to keep filter costs down and lets you share filters across other standard lenses in your kit.
- Does AI coupling mean this lens works with modern Nikon bodies?
- The AI indexing couples with metering systems on compatible F-mount bodies. Compatibility depends on the specific camera model - check your body's manual for AI lens support.
- Is this lens autofocus or manual focus?
- Manual focus only. You focus by hand using the focus ring, which gives you direct control of the focal plane.
- What aperture does this lens open to?
- f/1.4. At 35mm, that's a genuinely fast wide angle that handles low light and produces shallow depth of field when you want it.
- What mount is this, and will it fit my Nikon camera?
- Nikon F mount with AI coupling. If your camera accepts AI-coupled lenses, this will mount. F-mount bodies span decades, so verify your specific model's compatibility.
- Why choose 35mm over a 50mm standard lens?
- 35mm sits between a true wide angle and a standard view. It gives you more horizontal field of view than 50mm while keeping perspective natural enough for portraiture and everyday shooting.
