Classic 35mm f/1.4 NIKKOR-N.C, converted to AI indexing.
The NIKKOR-N.C Auto 35mm f/1.4 is one of Nikon's older fast wide designs, built around the N.C optical formula that preceded the current Nikkor lineage. This copy has been converted from its original pre-AI configuration to AI'd specification, meaning the aperture indexing tab has been added to make it compatible with AI-indexed Nikon F-mount bodies, metered coupling works as expected on cameras that require it.
At f/1.4 on a 35mm focal length, this lens sits in an useful range for low-light work and environmental shooting. Manual focus operation is the whole game here, so this is a lens for photographers who are comfortable working deliberately. The 52mm filter thread is a practical size with wide accessory availability.
The N.C optical formula carries a character that modern coatings and glass types have moved away from, and for photographers drawn to that rendering, this is a direct path to it. Pre-AI glass that has been properly AI'd gives you access to that optical heritage without sacrificing metering functionality on the bodies that demand it.
Who It's For
Film photographers shooting Nikon F-mount bodies will find this lens a natural fit, with AI indexing restoring full metered coupling on bodies from the AI era onward. Documentary and street photographers who prefer 35mm for its spatial relationship to subjects will appreciate the f/1.4 maximum aperture in dim, available-light environments. Photographers interested in the rendering characteristics of older NIKKOR optical formulas, particularly the N.C design, will find this a direct way to access that look. Adapted-glass shooters using mirrorless bodies with F-mount adapters can also use this lens for manual focus work.
