The Nikon 400mm f/2.8 G ED IF AF-S VR lens is a high end professional fast aperture super telephoto lens designed for sports, action, and performance photography as well as any other applications requiring a long focal length lens of uncompromising quality.
High optical marks are in part due to three ED (Extra Low Dispersion) glass elements and a Nikon Nano Crystal coated element placed strategically in an expert optical formulation by Nikon's world class lens designers. Professional standards extend to the mechanicals that house the optics in a cast magnesium alloy chassis which is sealed to resist dust and moisture intrusion.
Nikon's longest focal length with a f/2.8 aperture, the 400mm f/2.8 G ED IF AF-S VR excels at obliterating backgrounds and making subject matter pop. Such a high level opportunity for displaying depth and dimension comes with a responsibility for focus. Several features aid the endeavor. A SWM Silent Wave Motor provides fast and quiet focus even while tracking continuously. Full time manual focus override is customizable with the A/M, M/A, M prioritization switch. A group of four AF buttons surround the lens barrel and can be customized via dedicated switch to function as Autofocus Lock, AF On, or focus Memory Recall buttons. A focus limit switch allows selection of a narrower 6 meters to infinity focus range to significantly reduce autofocus time as closer focusing distances occupy an amount of focus travel that is proportionally much greater than in farther focus distances. The full focus range of the lens is 2.9 meters to infinity via AF or 2.8 m to infinity via manual focus.
Nikon's second generation Vibration Reduction system VR II offers improved stability equivalent to up to four stops worth of shutter speed. A VR mode switch offers two modes of operation 'Normal' for use with a monopod (including panning) and 'Tripod' mode which adjusts the VR system more for the lower strength yet higher frequency vibrations more common when a tripod is used. The VR system can be turned off with a separate VR on/off switch to save power.
A rotating tripod collar is an integral part of the lens. The standard taller tripod mounting plate/ handle can be changed with tools to a lower profile plate. A drop-in 52mm filter holder are standard. An optional drop-in circular polarizing filter C-PL1L is available separately. The standard lens hood is a two part reversible carbon fiber resin composite lens hood consisting of a HK-33-1 hood mounting directly to the lens and a HK-33-2 hood extension mounting to the HK-33-1. Case options include Nikon's Heavy duty case CT-404, and Semi-soft case CL-L2. The lens also features built-in strap attachment points as a convenience. Nikon AF-S Tele-converters such as the TC-14EII, TC-17EII, and TC-20EII further increase magnification and versatility.
Super-fast, telephoto lens, optimized for edge-to-edge sharpness on both the Nikon FX- (23.9 x 36mm) and DX-format image sensors.
New tripod detection mode reduces vibration that may occur due to shutter release when mounted on a tripod.
Exclusive Nano Crystal Coat and a meniscus protective glass element combine to further reduce ghosting and flare for even greater image clarity.
Rugged, reliable and lightweight, this lens features a magnesium die-cast barrel and professional-grade dust- and moisture-resistant construction.
Fully compatible with Nikon TC-14E II, TC-17E II and TC-20E II (III) Teleconverters
Nikon VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization provides 3.0 stops** of blur free handheld shooting, assuring dramatically sharper still images and HD video capture.
Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables ultra-high-speed autofocusing with exceptional accuracy and powerful, super-quiet operation.
Three Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements control chromatic aberrations while enhancing color, sharpness and contrast, even at the widest aperture settings.
New A/M focus mode provides fast, secure switching between auto and manual focus operation.
