The Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AI is a high end manual focus normal lens for Nikon SLR cameras.  It's a bright sharp well built lens able that produce exceptional images and it deservedly enjoys a reputation as one of Nikon's all time classics.

The 50mm f/1.4 AI produces superb center-to-edge definition while multiple layers of anti-reflective coatings on all air to glass surfaces help the lens achieve rich color and excellent contrast while minimizing flare and ghosting.  The f/1.4 maximum aperture allows plenty of depth of field control and the lens produces really nice blur.  The extra bright aperture makes focusing easier and allows use of faster shutter speeds, making it a good choice for available light shooting.  The physical construction is equally solid and doesn't disappoint, it's a continuation of the excellent engineering and craftsmanship that people expect from a premium Nikkor optic.

The Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AI model lens was originally released in 1977 as a high quality step up from the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 AI without the considerable extra expense of the Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 AI  In 1981 the Nikkor 50 mm f/1.4 AIS was released as a replacement providing compatibility with the Shutter Priority and Program autoexposure modes on the Nikon EM, FA, FG and later bodies; the two lenses are very similar and share the same .45m close focus but the AI model has 70° more focus throw.& Some users consider the extra turning simply more work and some users find it appealling or more precise.

The 50mm f/1.4 AI is an ideal normal lens for many Nikon cameras such as the FM2, FE2, F2, or F3 and is absolutely the perfect matching companion for it's contemporaries the Nikkormat FT3, Nikon EL2, Nikon FE, & Nikon FM.  It's useable on basically all Nikon 35mm film SLRs bodies and many digital Nikon SLR bodies*.
