Nikon 50mm f/2 NIKKOR-H.C Auto AI, a classic normal lens built for Nikon F.
This is the lens that spent decades proving 50mm is enough. The NIKKOR-H.C Auto AI is a manual focus prime on the Nikon F mount, and the AI conversion means it communicates properly with AI-compatible Nikon bodies. The 52mm filter thread is the standard Nikon sizing, so filters and caps you already own likely fit without an adapter.
At f/2, there's enough light-gathering to work in dim conditions and enough separation to isolate a subject against its background. Manual focus puts the photographer in direct control of the focusing ring, which suits methodical shooters who prefer precision over speed. The fixed 50mm focal length demands that you move your feet, which tends to sharpen compositional instincts over time.
A lens this mature has already been stress-tested by working photographers across decades of use. On a Nikon F-mount film body or a compatible digital body, it behaves exactly as expected. That kind of track record is worth something.
Who It's For
Street photographers drawn to a low-profile 50mm that doesn't attract attention will find the manual focus operation suits a slower, deliberate approach. Film shooters running Nikon F-mount bodies get proper AI coupling alongside a proven optical formula. Portrait photographers working in controlled settings, where manual focus speed is no liability, can use the f/2 maximum aperture to separate subjects from backgrounds. Photographers building a first manual lens kit around the Nikon F system will find the 52mm filter thread compatible with a wide range of affordable accessories.

FAQ
- What mount does this lens use?
- Nikon F mount with AI conversion, so it's compatible with AI-compatible Nikon F-mount film bodies and digital bodies that support AI lenses.
- Is this lens autofocus?
- No, this is manual focus only. You control the focusing ring directly.
- What filter size does it take?
- 52mm, the standard Nikon sizing. Most filters and caps you already own will fit without an adapter.
- What's the maximum aperture?
- f/2, which gives you enough light-gathering for dim conditions and enough subject isolation for portraiture and selective focus work.
- Is the focal length fixed at 50mm?
- Yes. It's a prime lens, so you're locked at 50mm and need to move your feet to compose.
- Can I use this on modern digital cameras?
- Yes, on any digital body that accepts Nikon F-mount AI lenses. You'll be shooting in manual exposure mode.
- Why is this lens called the NIKKOR-H.C Auto?
- That's the original Nikon designation for this model. The specifications confirm the mount is Nikon F (AI) and the lens is manual focus with a fixed 50mm focal length.
