Nikon 55mm f/3.5 Micro-NIKKOR-P.C: a classic macro lens built on the F mount.
The 55mm f/3.5 Micro-NIKKOR-P.C Auto is one of Nikon's macro lenses from the manual focus era. The P.C designation signals a fully corrected optical formula, which is the point of a dedicated macro lens, flat-field rendering matters when you're filling the frame with a subject that has no forgiving depth to hide aberrations. At 55mm, you get a focal length that works naturally for close-up work without forcing you into uncomfortable working distances. The 52mm filter thread accepts standard accessories.
This is a Non-AI Nikon F mount lens, which is the key compatibility detail to understand before buying. It fits into the larger world of F-mount film and digital shooting, but buyers need to confirm their specific body handles the Non-AI coupling before committing. Manual focus operation means you're working the focus ring yourself, which for macro shooting is often exactly what you want anyway, critical focus at close distances rarely benefits from autofocus hunting.
Who It's For
Film photographers shooting with Non-AI-compatible Nikon F-mount bodies will find this lens a natural fit for close-up and macro work, with the fully corrected P.C optical formula doing the technical heavy lifting. Copy photographers and still-life shooters working with flat subjects benefit from that same flat-field correction. Manual focus enthusiasts on mirrorless systems who adapt F-mount glass appreciate the 55mm focal length for tabletop and product work, where manual control at macro distances is standard practice anyway.

FAQ
- What does Non-AI mean for this Nikon lens?
- Non-AI refers to the mechanical coupling design of the F-mount - this lens predates Nikon's AI (Aperture Indexing) system. Before purchasing, confirm your camera body supports Non-AI F-mount lenses, as compatibility varies across different Nikon film and digital bodies.
- Is this lens suitable for macro photography?
- Yes. The 55mm f/3.5 Micro-NIKKOR designation means it's built specifically for macro work, and the P.C (fully corrected) optical formula ensures flat-field rendering for the critical focus and detail required in close-up shooting.
- How close can you focus with this lens?
- The verified specifications do not include minimum focus distance. Check the original documentation or test it against your specific shooting needs.
- Why manual focus for a macro lens?
- At close working distances, manual focus gives you direct control over critical focus placement without autofocus hunting. Many macro photographers prefer this for precision.
- What filters will fit on this lens?
- The 52mm filter thread accepts standard 52mm filters and accessories, which are widely available and affordable.
- Does this lens work on modern Nikon digital cameras?
- Non-AI F-mount lenses can mount on many Nikon digital bodies, but metering and other functions depend on your specific camera. Verify Non-AI compatibility with your camera's documentation before purchase.
