Nikon's classic 85mm f/2 AI portrait workhorse in F-mount.
The 85mm focal length has long been the go-to for portrait work, and Nikon's f/2 AI version earns its place in that tradition through optical engineering than marketing. The AI-coupled metering interface means this lens communicates exposure data directly to compatible Nikon bodies, letting you shoot with full metering support without giving up the tactile control of a manual focus ring. At f/2, you have enough light-gathering to work in low-contrast indoor settings while still resolving fine detail where it counts.
The 52mm filter thread is a practical bonus for photographers who already carry polarizers or ND filters in that size. This is a fixed 85mm, no zoom compromise, no variable aperture. You commit to the focal length and the lens rewards that commitment. For anyone working in the Nikon F ecosystem with film bodies or digital bodies that retain AI indexing, this lens integrates cleanly into a working kit at a price point that reflects its age, not its optical quality.
Who It's For
Film photographers shooting on Nikon F-mount bodies get full AI metering coupling, which keeps the exposure workflow intact without switching to stop-down mode. Portrait shooters drawn to the 85mm angle of view will appreciate f/2 for separating subjects from backgrounds in available light. Street and documentary photographers who prefer manual focus discipline find the fixed focal length forces deliberate framing. Collectors and hybrid shooters building out a manual glass kit on a budget get a name-brand Nikon prime with known optical heritage and broad F-mount compatibility.

FAQ
- Does this 85mm work with modern Nikon DSLRs?
- Yes, on any Nikon F-mount body with AI indexing support - that includes most film SLRs and digital DSLRs. You'll get full metering and aperture control, though autofocus won't function since this is manual focus only.
- What's the difference between AI and non-AI coupling?
- AI (Aperture Indexing) allows the lens to communicate aperture information to the camera body for accurate meter readings. Non-AI lenses require stop-down metering. This version has AI, so metering integrates directly.
- Is 52mm a common filter size?
- Yes. If you already own 52mm polarizers, ND filters, or other glass, you can use them directly on this lens without adapters.
- How does f/2 perform for portraits compared to faster lenses?
- At f/2, you get usable subject isolation and enough light to work indoors without a tripod. It's not as extreme as f/1.4, but it's sharp wide open and gives you working depth of control without the optical compromises of slower designs.
- Can I use this on a film body and a digital body?
- Absolutely. The AI coupling works the same on any F-mount camera that supports it, making this lens equally at home on a Nikon FM or an F6, and on compatible DSLRs.
- What about infinity focus and close focus range?
- Specifications for minimum focus distance are not documented. Check the barrel for distance markings or verify with your specific body before shooting critical work.
- Does this lens have image stabilization?
- No. This is a fixed-focal-length manual focus design without electronic components beyond AI metering coupling.
