Nikon's FX wide-angle zoom with VR II stabilization built in.
The 16-35mm f/4G covers the wide-angle range that landscape and architectural photographers rely on most, running from a 107° diagonal field of view at 16mm down to 63° at 35mm on full-frame bodies. The constant f/4 aperture means exposure stays consistent as you zoom, which matters when you're bracketing a scene or pulling focus across a changing composition. VR II stabilization compensates for up to 4 stops of camera shake, which extends handheld viability into low-light interiors and blue-hour situations where a tripod isn't always practical.
Optically, the lens uses 17 elements total, including three aspherical elements that address coma and field curvature, and two ED glass elements that pull chromatic aberration back in line at wide apertures. Nano Crystal Coat handles the other end of the flare problem, reducing ghosting across a broad range of wavelengths so backlit architecture and wide open skies render with contrast intact. The Silent Wave Motor autofocus is fast and quiet, and the internal focus design means the barrel doesn't extend during focus, which keeps a circular polarizer or graduated ND filter properly aligned throughout a shoot.
At 680g with a 77mm filter thread, this lens sits at a workable size for travel without sacrificing the build quality Nikon F-mount shooters expect. On DX bodies, the focal range shifts to an effective 24-52mm equivalent, still useful for environmental work. For FX shooters who want a dedicated wide zoom with stabilization already integrated, this lens has remained a go-to for good reason.
Who It's For
Landscape photographers benefit from the 107° field of view at 16mm paired with VR II stabilization, which keeps long-exposure handheld work viable when conditions change fast. Architecture and interior photographers will appreciate the Nano Crystal Coat managing flare in mixed or artificial lighting, and the internal focus keeping polarizer rotation fixed. Travel shooters carrying a single wide zoom get the constant f/4 aperture across the full range without juggling primes. Documentary and editorial photographers working on Nikon FX bodies get reliable AF via the Silent Wave Motor in situations where silence matters.

FAQ
- What's the effective focal length on a DX-format Nikon body?
- The 16-35mm range becomes 24-52mm equivalent in DX crop mode, shifting the field of view from 83° to 44° on the diagonal. Still a solid wide to standard range for environmental work on cropped sensors.
- Does the barrel extend when focusing?
- No. The internal focus design keeps the barrel fixed throughout the focus range, so a circular polarizer or graduated ND filter stays properly aligned without needing adjustment as you focus.
- How much shake compensation does the VR II system provide?
- VR II compensates for up to 4 stops of camera shake, which extends handheld viability in low-light interiors and blue-hour situations where a tripod isn't always available.
- Why does a constant f/4 aperture matter on a zoom?
- Exposure stays consistent as you zoom, which matters when you're bracketing a scene or pulling focus across a changing composition. You don't have to recalculate shutter speed as the focal length shifts.
- What size filters does this lens accept?
- The 77mm filter thread accepts standard circular polarizers, neutral-density filters, and graduated filters. At 680g, the lens doesn't introduce significant weight penalties when stacking glass.
- Does this lens work on full-frame and crop-sensor Nikon bodies?
- Yes. It's designed for FX format but is fully compatible with DX-format DSLRs. On FX bodies you get the full 16-35mm range; on DX bodies the effective range becomes 24-52mm.
- What optical elements control chromatic aberration and distortion?
- Three aspherical elements eliminate coma and field curvature, while two ED (extra-low dispersion) elements minimize chromatic aberration across the aperture range. Nano Crystal Coat handles ghosting and flare separately.
