Leica-certified MFT zoom holds f/1.7 across its entire range
A constant f/1.7 aperture through a 10-25mm (20-50mm equivalent) zoom range is the kind of specification that sounds too good to be true on paper. On a Micro Four Thirds body, it means you get wide-angle documentary reach and standard-portrait framing without once touching aperture when light drops. The optical construction behind that feat is substantial: 17 elements across 12 groups, with three aspherical elements correcting spherical aberration and distortion, and four ED elements suppressing chromatic aberration at both ends of the zoom.
For video work, this lens was built with specific intentions. The aperture ring operates in stepless, de-clicked fashion, so exposure transitions stay smooth when scene brightness shifts mid-take. A micro-step drive system in aperture control pairs with barycentric optical stability to minimize brightness shifts during zooming. Focus breathing suppression is built into the optical design, a genuine differentiator for run-and-gun shooters who can't afford rack-focus artifacts. The inner focus drive runs silently, and a clutch mechanism allows instant switching between AF and manual focus without hunting through menus.
Carrying Leica certification means the optical design passed AG's quality validation process. At 690 g with a 77mm front filter thread, this is not a small lens, but the tradeoff for constant f/1.7 over that focal range is one most working shooters will accept without hesitation.
Who It's For
Documentary and event videographers gain the most from the stepless aperture ring and focus breathing suppression, both matter when shooting continuous takes across changing light. Street and reportage photographers shooting on MFT bodies benefit from the 20-50mm equivalent range at f/1.7, covering wide environmental shots and tighter frames without a lens swap. Low-light event photographers, particularly those working indoors without flash, get a consistent f/1.7 through the entire zoom than losing a stop or more at longer focal lengths. Hybrid shooters splitting time between stills and video will find the silent autofocus drive and clutch mechanism handle both workflows without compromise.

FAQ
- Does this lens really maintain f/1.7 across the entire 10-25mm zoom range?
- Yes. The optical construction-17 elements in 12 groups with three aspherical and four ED elements-holds f/1.7 from wide to standard framing without stopping down as you zoom.
- How does this perform for video work?
- The stepless de-clicked aperture ring and micro-step drive system smooth exposure transitions during brightness shifts. Focus breathing suppression is built into the optical design, and the inner focus drive runs silently.
- What's the 35mm equivalent focal length on MFT bodies?
- 20-50mm. You get wide-angle reach at 10mm and standard portrait framing at 25mm on any Micro Four Thirds camera.
- Can you switch between autofocus and manual focus quickly?
- A focus clutch mechanism lets you flip between AF and MF instantly without menu diving. Manual focus is direct once the clutch is engaged.
- How much does it weigh and what filter size does it take?
- 690g with a 77mm front filter thread. It's not light, but the constant f/1.7 across that zoom range justifies the heft for most working shooters.
- What does Leica certification actually mean for this lens?
- The optical design passed Leica Camera AG's quality validation standards. It's not a Leica-made lens, but it meets their optical performance criteria.
- What's the minimum focusing distance?
- 28cm (11 inches). Close enough for tight framing on subjects without extension tubes.
