Description

DETAILS

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000 is the Panasonic LUMIX flagship bridge camera with ultimate image quality.  The Lumix DMC-FZ1000 produces superb images with a large 1-inch 20.1-megapixel High Sensitivity MOS sensor and all-new lens, perfect for conveying the limitless depth and sunlit warmth of nature.  The powerful built-in Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 16x optical zoom brings everything up close, from tiny birds on tree branches to animals crossing the distant horizon.  Select photos or enjoy shooting crisp 4K resolution video.  Experience clear images with minimum noise, while capturing at up to ISO 12,800 (extended ISO 25,600 also available).  The focus system's integral linear motor achieves approximately 275% faster focusing, compared to the conventional DMC-FZ200.  THE FZ1000 uses DFD (Depth From Defocus) technology that shortens the time to set the focus, thus delivering an ultra high-speed auto focus of approximately 0.09 per second (wide-end) and approximately 0.171 (tele-end).

The FZ1000 enjoys 5 axis Hybrid OIS Optical Image Stabilization that dramatically improves handheld image quality especially when shooting at high telephoto magnifications. The Leica DC Vario-Elmarit's bright maximum aperture of f/2.8-4 also makes it easier to use faster blur resisting shutter speeds.  The 25-400mm equivalent lens its compossed of 15 elements in 11 groups, including 4 Extra-low dispersion (ED) and 5 aspherical elements with 8 aspherical surfaces, this advanced lens unit achieves high MTF values.  Adoption of 5 aspherical glass lenses achieves beautiful, evenly smooth defocus with invisible edge lines, which is made possible by Panasonic's unique aspherical lens mold technology.

Staff Review

Wow, what a camera! It is loaded with features and has too many to list. Highlights include 20.1 megapixels, a 16x zoom lens (25-400mm equivalent) swivel viewing screen and 4K video.

To start with it is comfortable in my hand and the settings are easy to get to. It feels just like a SLR but without having to change the lenses. The zoom range does everything that I need and more. There is no need to talk about how great the Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens is as Leica is known for high quality glass. I am so glad that Panasonic teamed up with Leica for their digital cameras and lenses. The lens is a variable f/stop lens with maximum aperture being f/2.8-4. I shot some pictures inside the house with existing light and was very impressed. The focus is fast and accurate with a minimum of noise, mostly the confirmation beep. The hybrid O.I.S. image stabilization is a huge help as well. Standard ISO is 125-12,800 but is expandable from 80-25,600.

I look forward to experimenting with the myriad of shooting modes, especially the black and white mode, but have not had time yet. It also has 11 white balance modes and 8 flash modes. Originally I did not want the electronic viewfinder or the zoom lens with the electronic zoom but now that I have used them, I absolutely love them. The viewfinder is like looking at a small tv screen. I am a big fan of the fully adjustable swivel viewing screen so I can get very low angle shots without having to get on my knees. It also comes in handy when shooting over a crowd or fence. I will be using the screen exclusively once I start using the video function.

I have never shot 4K video before so that will come later after I get used to the rest of the camera. I have read some of the instruction book and it shows video length up to 29 minutes and 59 seconds which is more than I will ever need. It also has a built in microphone but my son is already looking at a Rode Microphone to go with this camera.

Overall, a feature filled camera at a reasonable price. The lens alone is worth the price. - Larry Hicks
