Samyang's 14mm f/2.8 autofocus ultra-wide built for full-frame Canon EF.
A 14mm prime with autofocus was a genuine gap in the Canon EF ecosystem, and Samyang filled it here. The optical formula runs 15 elements across 10 groups, with one ED element controlling chromatic aberration, two aspherical elements managing distortion at this focal length, and four high refractive index elements contributing to edge-to-edge consistency. Ultra-Multi-Coating on individual elements cuts flare and ghosting in high-contrast scenes. The internal focus mechanism keeps the front element stationary during focus pulls, which matters when you're shooting with a polarizer under an open sky.
At f/2.8, this lens opens wide enough for astrophotography on a full-frame body without demanding a tracker for every shot. Weather sealing in the all-metal housing means you're not packing up when conditions shift. The minimum focus distance of 0.20m gives foreground subjects real presence in a composition, a trait landscape and architectural shooters will use often. Full-time manual focus override works without switching modes. For Canon EF users who want a wide autofocus prime at a price below the major-brand alternatives, this is a well-established option with a proven optical pedigree.
Who It's For
Astrophotographers shooting on full-frame Canon bodies get f/2.8 light-gathering at 14mm with autofocus, skipping the manual-only limitation of older ultra-wides in this range. Landscape photographers benefit from the 0.20m minimum focus distance, which lets a rock or flower anchor the foreground while the background stretches to the horizon. Documentary and travel shooters working in variable weather rely on the sealed metal housing to keep moving when the sky opens up. Video operators pulling focus will appreciate the internal focus mechanism and quiet AF drive, which keeps the front element stable and avoids on-camera microphone noise.

FAQ
- Does this 14mm have autofocus, and how fast is it?
- Yes, autofocus is built in. The system uses a lightweight internal focus group for quick, quiet performance-fast enough for both stills and video work without hunting.
- Can you manually focus while in autofocus mode?
- Full-time manual focus override is available. You don't need to switch modes to take control of focus.
- What's the minimum focus distance, and does it matter for wide-angle shooting?
- 0.20m (7.87"), which is close enough to give foreground subjects real presence in compositions-especially useful in landscape and architectural work where depth layering matters.
- Is this lens weather-sealed?
- Yes. The all-metal housing is weather-sealed, so you won't need to pack up when conditions shift.
- What aperture range does it cover?
- f/2.8 to f/22. At f/2.8, it's wide enough for astrophotography on full-frame without demanding a star tracker for every exposure.
- Does the front element move during focusing?
- No. Internal focus keeps the front element stationary, which matters if you're using a polarizer or graduated ND filter.
- What's included with the lens?
- A lens hood ships in the box. No tripod collar is included.
