The Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G SSM (SAL70200) is a high-end fast telephoto zoom lens for the Sony Alpha system, it delivers outstanding pro level performance.  It's an all-purpose long lens that expertly captures action, compressed landscape details, portraits, sports and anything in between.  The SAL70200 fits directly on Sony Alpha Mount DSLRs and SLT digital camera bodies; it's also useable on Sony Mirrorless Cameras through a range of dedicated Alpha-Mount to E-Mount adapters.

The 70-200mm f/2.8 G SSM produces high-resolution images and smooth bokeh that's pleasing to the eye thanks to a highly corrected 19 element 16 group optical design that includes 4 ED (Extra low Dispersion) elements to maximize image quality.  The SAL70200 provides excellent color and contrast across it's broad and useful tele zoom range and the maximum aperture stays a constant bright f/2.8 across the entire focal length range too.  An f/2.8 aperture combined with a range of telephoto focal lengths is an unbeatably versatile combination and a predominant lens choice for most pros.  The large aperture and long focal lengths allow tremendous background blur and seperation so subject matter stands out while also affording the best action freezing shutter speeds.  The SAL70200 autofocus system is designed for action too, a quiet SSM (Super Sonic Motor) powers an IF (Internal Focus) group of elements for fast responsive AF.  A focus range limit switch allows optimized set-up for distance shooting and autofocus lock buttons are positioned around the lens barrel for easier reach.

The physical construction of the SAL70200 is professional grade too.  The metal barrel and controls have the solid fit and finish one expects from a top-of-the-line lens.  The included rotating tripod mount allows for much steadier shooting and makes switching from horizontal to vertical compositions effortless. The metal lens mount is surrounded by a dust seal.

Introduced in 2006 not long after KonicaMinolta was acquired by Sony.  The 70-200mm f/2.8 G SSM (SAL70200) is based on an excellent Minolta G Design but adds a SSM Motor for fast AF.  In 2013 a 2nd version Sony 70-200mm F/2.8 G SSM II (SAL70200G2) was released with additional weather sealing and a faster motor.  Other than newer anti-reflective coatings the Version II optics are effectively the same as the original model and it remains a popular option.
