Introduced in 2013 following the overwhelming success of the the original Cyber-shot RX100, the RX100II (sometimes referred to as the RX100M2) keeps the same popular lens and form factor while adding an improved sensor and even more flexible amenities.  The Cyber-shot RX100II uses a new BSI-CMOS (Back Side Illuminated) sensor to further reduce image noise.  BSI (Back Side Illuminated) sensors increase the effective area for each pixel thus improving signal to noise, resulting in increased sensitivity.  WiFi and NFC connectivity have been added.  The new tilting screen allows for easier shooting held at lower positions or overhead.  The addition of a Multi Interface Shoe Connector allows use of Electronic Viewfinders like the eye-level FDA-EV1MK OLED finder, or larger flashes like the HVL-F20M.

In 2014 Sony released a follow-up model the Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 III with a brighter but shorter lens, increased LCD articulation range, and a pop-up eye-level finder; due to continued demand the RX100II was not discontinued and both models remain popular.
