Why KEH Doesn’t Repair Water-Damaged Camera Gear

Gear that has been water-damaged is always a massive gamble. From the outside, it’s impossible to know exactly where the water went or what components it touched. We generally turn down water-damaged repairs for a few critical reasons:

  • The Electrical Risk: Water itself isn’t necessarily a strong conductor, but the minerals, salts, and other contaminants dissolved in most real-world water can make it conductive. If that moisture reaches an energized circuit, it can create shorts and damage delicate electronic components. Even if the gear appears to work initially, moisture left behind can cause problems over time.
  • The Contamination Factor: Water is rarely just water. Ocean water, lakes, rivers, pools, and even rain can carry salt, minerals, dirt, sand, chemicals, and other contaminants into your gear. Once contaminants enter a lens or camera, completely removing them without damaging delicate components can be extremely difficult.

Saltwater vs. Freshwater: Is One Worse for Your Gear?

Not all water damage is created equal. While any liquid exposure can be dangerous for camera gear, saltwater is particularly destructive.

  • Saltwater: Saltwater is both conductive and corrosive because of its dissolved salts. Once it gets inside your camera or lens, it can accelerate corrosion of metal components and electrical contacts. Even after the water evaporates, salt crystals and other contaminants can remain behind. Ocean water can also carry sand, microorganisms, and other debris into the equipment.
  • Freshwater: Freshwater is generally less corrosive than saltwater, but that doesn’t make it harmless. Lakes, rivers, pools, and rainwater can contain minerals, dirt, chemicals, and other contaminants. Freshwater can also cause electrical problems while the gear is wet and can contribute to corrosion if moisture remains trapped inside.

The bottom line: If your gear gets submerged, treat it as an emergency, regardless of the water type. Saltwater generally presents a greater corrosion risk, but freshwater can still cause serious electrical and mechanical damage. 

The Case Study: Max’s Saltwater Survivor

When Max brought his Canon EF 400mm lens into the shop, it was in a very sorry state. Water from the Gulf of Mexico had breached the weather seals, infiltrating the front element stack and the main case. Because the lens sat in a closed box for three years after the hurricane, the water eventually dried—but the harsh sea salt crystallized inside.

Our team boasts manufacturer-approved repair capabilities, which means they usually spend their days performing precise, factory-standard calibrations and replacing delicate components. This repair, however, was a monumental, forceful defusal.

The saltwater had allowed microorganisms to grow, turning the internal glass into a hazy, opaque mess. Worse, the screws were essentially welded in place by rust and salt. It took two technicians using hammers, punches, heat guns, and aggressive chemical solvents like acetone over multiple weeks just to break down the crystallized salt and remove the main casing.

Even though the lens was eventually saved—miraculously, it had been stored front-element-down, which kept the saltwater away from the main motherboard—the exposure permanently destroyed some of the high-tech, chemically bonded coatings along the edges of the internal glass.

We got incredibly lucky with Max’s lens, but the grueling process perfectly illustrates why flooded lenses are usually considered beyond reasonable repair. Getting into delicate equipment requires a delicate touch; water damage turns that into a battle of combined physical strength.

What to Do If Your Camera Gear Gets Wet

If your gear takes a dive, acting quickly can be the difference between a salvageable piece of equipment and a paperweight. Follow these steps immediately:

  1. Cut the Power
    The absolute first thing you should do is remove the batteries. Electricity and water are the ultimate gear-killing combo. Disconnect any power source to prevent the circuits from shorting out.
  2. Open Everything Up
    Remove the lenses, memory cards, and open every single door, flap, and compartment. Your goal is to get the trapped water out and let the internal cavities breathe. The worst thing that can happen is for water to sit stagnant inside a closed, dark environment.
  3. Stop Using It Immediately
    Never keep using soaked gear. It might seem like it’s still functioning in the moment, but that water is actively seeping its way deeper into your camera body. Water always finds the lowest point, and on its way down, it touches everything you don’t want it to.
  4. Get an Honest Evaluation ASAP
    Corrosion doesn’t stop just because the outside of your camera feels dry. Water can sit deep inside a lens for months. Take it to a professional for an honest, transparent evaluation immediately.     Whatever you do, please do not put your camera gear in a bag of rice. It is a persistent myth, but rice does not magically pull moisture out from deep inside your camera. Instead, the water dissolves starches from the rice grains and carries that sticky, starchy mess straight into the delicate internal mechanics of your gear. It makes the damage worse and creates a nightmare for any repair technician.

How to Keep Your Camera Gear Dry

The best way to deal with water damage is to prevent it in the first place. You don’t have to avoid shooting in unpredictable weather, but a little preparation can go a long way.

  • Use a Rain Cover: A dedicated camera rain cover is one of the easiest ways to protect your gear when you’re shooting in steady rain. Keep one in your camera bag so you’re not caught unprepared. It won’t help if your gear is fully submerged like Max’s, but it’s still good to have on hand!
  • Pack a Weather-Resistant Setup: Some cameras and lenses are designed with weather sealing to provide additional protection from dust and moisture. Just remember that weather sealing isn’t the same as waterproofing. Check your camera and lens manufacturer’s specifications before intentionally exposing your gear to rain or water.
  • Keep Your Gear in a Bag: When you’re not actively shooting, put your camera away. A weather-resistant camera bag or dry bag can provide another layer of protection when you’re hiking, traveling, or shooting near water.
  • Use Lens Hoods: A lens hood isn’t just for reducing glare. It can also help keep rain and other moisture off the front element, giving you one less thing to worry about while you’re shooting.
  • Be Careful Around Water: Shooting from a boat, beach, pool, or waterfall comes with obvious risks. Use a secure strap, keep your gear away from the edge, and avoid changing lenses or opening compartments when you’re exposed to spray or splashing water. If you have to get in the splash zone to get the shot… we get it! Just understand that it’s a calculated risk and to take as many precautions as possible. 
  • Let Cold Gear Acclimate: Moving a cold camera into a warm, humid environment can cause condensation to form on the outside and inside of the equipment. Keep your gear in a sealed bag until it has reached room temperature before opening it.

A little preparation can make the difference between getting the shot and getting your gear repaired. When you’re shooting around water, think ahead about where your equipment will go if the weather changes or your camera takes an unexpected splash.
